Formatting that is pure memorisation

Citation styles are arbitrary by nature. Whether the year goes in parentheses, whether the title is italicised, whether authors are inverted, where the full stops fall — none of it is reasoning, it is recall, and it differs by style.

Pick APA, MLA or Chicago, choose website, book or journal article, fill in what you have. The citation builds as you type, ready to copy into a bibliography.

Multiple authors, where styles diverge most

Add an author for each person and they are joined according to the style you picked. The rules genuinely differ: APA uses an ampersand before the final author, MLA and Chicago switch to "et al." once the list passes a certain length, and the thresholds are not the same.

This is the part most hand-written citations get wrong, because it is the part nobody remembers.

Check it before you submit

APA 7th edition, MLA 9th and Chicago notes-bibliography — the current common versions. It is a strong head start and it is not a guarantee.

Styles carry a long tail of edge cases: corporate authors, missing dates, republished works, sources inside other sources. Only you know the details of your source, and only your institution knows which variant it wants. Treat the output as a draft to check against your assignment's style guide, not as a finished answer.

Questions

Common questions

What does this tool do?

It formats your source details into a citation in APA, MLA, or Chicago style, for the three most common source types: a website, a book, or a journal article. The citation builds as you type so you can copy it into your bibliography.

How do I use it?

Pick your style (APA, MLA, or Chicago) and source type (website, book, or journal), add the author(s), and fill in the fields shown. The formatted citation appears at the bottom — click Copy to grab it.

How do I add more than one author?

Click Add author for each additional person. The tool joins them correctly for your chosen style — for example APA uses an ampersand before the last author, while MLA and Chicago switch to 'et al.' once there are several.

Which versions of the styles does it follow?

APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, and Chicago (notes-bibliography style). These are the current common versions used in most schools and universities.

Will the citation be perfect?

It's a strong head start, but treat it as a helper, not a guarantee. Citation styles have many small punctuation rules and edge cases, and only you know all the details of your source. Always check the result against your assignment's required style guide before submitting.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The citation is built entirely in your browser — no ads, no account, nothing sent anywhere.
