Great Scott Labs

Third-party notices

Whose code is in here

Almost all of it is ours. What isn’t is listed below, by product, with what it does and the licence it carries.

There is a rule behind this list: everything shipped inside a Great Scott Labs product is MIT, BSD, Apache 2.0, or something equally permissive — or it is a part of Windows you already have. Nothing under the GPL or LGPL is linked, bundled, or downloaded on first run. That is a deliberate constraint, and it has cost real work more than once.

Why that rule exists

A copyleft licence inside a closed-source product creates an obligation — sometimes to publish source, sometimes to let the user swap the library out, always to be certain which build you shipped. Those obligations are manageable for a company with a legal department. For one person they are a liability that grows quietly until the day somebody asks.

So the dependency list is kept short and permissive on purpose, and when a capability has no permissive option the usual answer has been to write it. The audio decoding in Lickety is the clearest example: the obvious tool for the job carries a licence that could not ship here, so the decoding runs through the codecs Windows already includes instead. That took longer. It also means there is nothing on this page that could ever force a change in how the software is licensed to you.

The free browser tools

Thirty-eight of the forty-five are hand-written with no third-party code at all. Seven bundle one or more libraries, listed here with the tools that carry them. Every bundled library is embedded in the file, so the tools still work with no network — none of this is fetched from anybody’s CDN at the moment you use it.

Where a tool writes a ZIP of its own output, that is hand-written rather than borrowed — which is why most of the tools that produce several files at once are not on this list.

Licence texts, and corrections

The full text of every licence above ships inside the product that uses it — in the install folder for the Windows programs, and in the file itself for the browser tools, where you can read it by opening the page source.

If something is missing from this page, or attributed wrongly, that is a defect and we want to know. Email support@greatscottlabs.co and it gets fixed, with the correction noted here.

Products still in build are not listed. They are added on the day they ship, not before — a notice page that describes software nobody can download yet is a page that will be out of date by the time anyone needs it.
