Credit hours are the part that matters

A GPA is not the average of your grades. Each grade is worth points — A is 4.0, A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3 and so on — and each course's points are multiplied by its credit hours before anything is added up and divided by the total credits.

That weighting is the whole mechanism. A four-credit course moves your GPA roughly twice as much as a two-credit one, which is worth knowing before you decide where to spend the effort.

Using it to plan rather than to record

Add a row per course, set the grade and the credits, and the GPA updates as you go. Course names are optional and only for your own reference.

The useful trick is entering grades you have not earned yet. Put in the marks you are aiming for and you can see what a term actually needs to look like to move the number where you want it — which is considerably more informative than finding out in June.

Where your school may differ

This uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale with plus and minus steps, which covers most institutions.

Plenty of schools do something else: extra points for honours and AP courses, a different scale entirely, or their own rounding rules. If yours does, this gives you a close reference rather than an official figure — check it against your school's own method. Nothing you enter is uploaded.

Questions

Common questions

What does this tool do?

It calculates your GPA (grade point average) from your courses' letter grades and credit hours, using the standard 4.0 scale.

How do I use it?

Add a row for each course, choose its letter grade, and enter how many credit hours it's worth. Add or remove rows as needed. Your GPA updates as you go. Course names are optional and just for your reference.

How is GPA calculated?

Each grade is worth grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on). Each course's points are multiplied by its credit hours, those are added up, and the total is divided by the total credits. So courses worth more credits affect your GPA more.

What grade scale does it use?

The common unweighted 4.0 scale with plus/minus steps. A and A+ are both 4.0, A− is 3.7, down to F at 0.0.

Does it handle weighted or honors GPAs?

No — it uses the standard unweighted scale. Some schools add extra points for honors or AP courses, or use a different scale entirely, so check the result against your school's official method if yours differs.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Your courses and grades stay in your browser — no ads, nothing sent anywhere.
