Pre-tax or post-tax
The convention is to tip on the pre-tax amount, on the reasoning that the tax is not part of the service. Plenty of people tip on the total anyway, and in some places the printed suggested tips are calculated on the total.
This tool tips on whichever figure you type in, and takes no position. If you want to tip pre-tax, enter the pre-tax subtotal.
Why the split may be a penny out
Each person's share is rounded to the nearest cent, so three people splitting a bill ending in an awkward number can add up to a penny more or less than the total.
That is unavoidable with real money — somebody has to take the extra cent. It is flagged here rather than quietly hidden, because at a table of four the difference is noticed and the arithmetic gets blamed.

What does this tool do?

How do I use it?

Can I set a custom tip percentage?

Is the tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
The tool tips on whatever bill figure you enter. Tipping is customarily based on the pre-tax bill, but some people tip on the full total — enter the figure you prefer to tip on.
How does splitting work?
It divides the bill-plus-tip evenly by the number of people. The per-person figure is rounded to the nearest cent, so individual shares may differ by a penny from the exact total.
