Remote sessions

Full-screen RDP.
Still types.

If you work inside a remote desktop all day, you have probably already found out that most dictation tools don't. The hotkey gets swallowed by the session, or the text lands in the wrong window, or nothing happens at all and there's no error to look up.

Why this one is different

Not because of a clever feature. Because the person who wrote it spends his working day connected to a machine two hundred miles away, in a full-screen session, dictating into it. RDP wasn't a compatibility box to tick at the end — it was the reason the thing got built.

Text is inserted three different ways depending on what the target window will accept, and the tool falls back between them rather than failing silently. When an insert does fail, it tells you, and the text is still there to paste.

The one setting you have to change

This part is honest rather than flattering. In a full-screen remote session, the RDP client can be configured to hand every Windows key combination to the remote machine — which means your local hotkey never reaches the local software. That isn't a Lickety bug and no dictation tool can work around it, because the keystroke genuinely never arrives.

It's a one-time setting. In your RDP client, under Local Resources, set Apply Windows key combinations to On this computer. Reconnect and the hotkey works.

Page note: this section is why the page is worth having. Somebody is typing "dictation not working in remote desktop" into a search box right now, and nobody in this category has written the answer down. Answering it properly — including the part where the fix is in their client and not our software — is what earns the ranking. Delete this box before publishing.

A full-screen remote session. Hold the key, speak, release, the sentence lands in the remote app. Nothing else on screen.

The claim here is "it works," so the evidence is unedited footage of it working.

Tested against

Windows Remote Desktop

Windowed and full-screen, single and dual monitor, across the client setting described above.

Citrix, VMware Horizon, VNC — untested

They use the same insertion path as RDP, so there is every reason to think they work. Nobody has verified it, so this page is not going to claim it. If you try one, tell me what happened and this card gets rewritten with the answer.

The apps inside

Outlook, Word, Excel, Notepad and browsers, running remotely. Each one accepts text slightly differently.
