The format that arrived before the software did
AVIF is the newest of the web image formats, and it is genuinely impressive — the same picture at a fraction of the file size. Sites adopted it fast because page weight is money. The software on your desk adopted it slowly, because nobody was asking for it yet.
So you right-click, save the image, and land on a file that your photo viewer, your design program and the upload box on the form you are filling in all refuse to touch. Nothing is wrong with the file. It is just newer than the thing trying to open it.
Why this one carries no decoder
AVIF is royalty-free, and every current browser decodes it natively. That means this tool contains no decoding library at all — it asks the browser to read the image, then asks it to write a JPG or PNG back out. One file, no dependencies, nothing to go out of date.
It is also why there is no HEIC converter here. HEIC wraps a patented codec, browsers will not decode it, and a web tool would have to ship its own. That one belongs in a Windows application that can use the codec Microsoft already paid for.
JPG or PNG
JPG for photographs — universal, small, and the detail it discards is detail your eye was not using. PNG if the image has transparency, or sharp text and flat colour you want kept exact.
If the AVIF had a transparent background and you pick JPG, that transparency has to become some solid colour, because JPG cannot store it. Choose PNG and the question does not arise.

Can you convert HEIC from my iPhone too?
Not in this web tool. HEIC uses a patented codec that browsers can't legally decode, so it needs a different approach — that's handled in our photo software rather than here.
