Base64 Encoder / Decoder
Encode and decode Base64, including turning an image into a data URI. It runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your computer.
Three jobs in one tool
Base64 writes arbitrary data as plain text using 64 safe characters. That solves a specific recurring problem: getting binary through a channel that only accepts text.
The headline use here is the data URI — drop an image in and get a single line beginning data:image that holds the entire picture. Paste that into HTML or CSS and the image needs no separate file at all, which removes a network request and a broken-link risk in one move. There is also straight text encoding and decoding, UTF-8 safe, and file encoding.
Base64 is not encryption, and the distinction matters
This gets misunderstood often enough to be worth stating plainly: Base64 is an encoding, not a cipher. It has no key. Anyone who sees it can decode it instantly, including with this tool.
A password "protected" by Base64 is a password written down in a slightly inconvenient font. If something needs to stay secret, it needs actual encryption.
Where it is worth caring about privacy
People paste JWTs, config fragments and API responses into Base64 decoders to see what is inside them, and those strings routinely contain credentials.
Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you paste or drop goes anywhere — which is not a claim every free Base64 site can make.
Questions
Common questions
What does this tool do?
It converts text or images to and from Base64 — a way of writing data as plain text. It also turns an image into a data URI, which is a single line of text that holds the whole image.
How do I encode or decode text?
Paste your text into the box and the Base64 appears, or paste Base64 in to get the original text back. It updates as you type.
How do I turn an image into a data URI?
Drop an image onto the tool and it produces a data URI — a long text string beginning with 'data:image' that contains the entire image. You can paste that straight into HTML or CSS so the image needs no separate file.
What is Base64 used for?
It's mostly a developer tool — embedding small images directly in code, sending binary data through text-only channels, or inspecting encoded values in tokens and config files.
Is Base64 encryption? Is it secure?
No. Base64 is just a reversible way of writing data as text — anyone can decode it instantly. Don't treat it as a way to hide or protect anything secret.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything is encoded and decoded on your own computer in the browser — nothing you paste or drop is uploaded. That matters, since some online Base64 tools quietly log what you paste.
Our own software
Dictate it instead of typing it
Hold a key, say the sentence, and the words land in whatever Windows window you were already in. Runs on your own PC — no account, no upload, nothing to renew.
