Why Markdown won

Markdown is formatting you can read in its raw state. A # makes a heading, asterisks make bold, dashes make a list. Nothing is hidden, nothing is proprietary, and it stays legible in a text editor, a terminal, an email or a code review.

It converts cleanly to HTML, which is the actual point. Write in something comfortable, publish something a browser understands.

The live preview is the feature

Type on one side and the formatted result and the HTML both update as you go. That tightens the loop on the part people get wrong — list nesting, where blank lines matter, whether that underscore made italics or just sat there.

The HTML it produces is clean and standard, with no wrapper divs or framework classes bolted on. Paste it into a site, a blog post, an email template or a CMS field and it behaves.

If you are starting from Word

This converts Markdown to HTML. If what you actually have is a .docx, MarkPost converts Word to Markdown and back, and you can bring the result here afterwards. Neither tool uploads anything.

Questions

Common questions

What does this tool do?

It converts Markdown (text written with simple marks like # for headings and ** for bold) into clean HTML, with a live preview so you can see the formatted result as you go.

How do I use it?

Type or paste Markdown into the editor. The formatted preview and the HTML output update instantly. Copy the HTML when you're happy with it.

What is Markdown?

It's a simple way to format plain text — # makes a heading, ** makes bold, dashes make a list, and so on. It's popular because it's quick to write and converts cleanly to HTML for the web.

What can I do with the HTML it produces?

Paste it into a website, a blog post, an email template, or anywhere HTML is accepted. It's clean, standard HTML with no junk wrapping.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely on your own computer in the browser — nothing you type or paste leaves your machine.

Can I convert a Word document instead?

Yes — use the companion Doc to Markdown Converter, which turns Word .docx files into Markdown (and back).
