CSV to JSON Converter
Convert between CSV and JSON, and view a CSV as a sortable table. It runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your computer.
The boundary between two worlds
CSV is what spreadsheets and finance systems produce. JSON is what APIs and applications consume. Converting between them is a chore that recurs constantly and has no interesting part.
Both directions work here. Paste or drop a CSV and get JSON out, or paste JSON and get CSV back. There is also a table view, which turns out to be the feature people actually keep coming back for: drop a CSV in and read it as a sortable table without opening a spreadsheet program at all.
When the columns come out wrong
Two causes account for nearly every misaligned conversion. The first is that the first row needs to be the column headers — if your export put a title or a blank line on top, the converter reads that as the header row and everything shifts.
The second is quoting. A field containing a comma must be wrapped in quotes, or the comma reads as a column break and that row gains a column the others do not have. If one row is mangled and the rest are fine, look for an unquoted comma in it.
Why not just paste it into a website
Because CSV exports are usually customer lists, order histories, payroll extracts or something else you would rather not hand to a stranger's server in exchange for a formatting favour.
Everything here converts in your browser. The file is read from your disk and never leaves it.
Questions
Common questions
What does this tool do?
It converts data between CSV (the spreadsheet/comma format) and JSON (the developer format), in both directions, and can show a CSV as a sortable table so you can read it without Excel.
How do I convert CSV to JSON?
Paste or drop your CSV in. The tool reads the columns and produces JSON, and you can copy or download the result. It works the other way too — paste JSON to get CSV.
Can I open a CSV without Excel?
Yes. Drop the CSV in and it displays as a clean table you can sort by clicking column headers — handy for a quick look at a data file when you don't have or want a spreadsheet program.
My CSV looks wrong after converting — why?
Usually the first row needs to be the column headers, and fields containing commas should be wrapped in quotes. If columns are misaligned, check that the header row and the quoting in the source data are correct.
Is my data private?
Yes. All converting happens on your own computer in the browser — your data is never uploaded. That's reassuring when the file holds anything sensitive.
