Why there's no HEIC converter here

It's the most-requested one and it's deliberately missing. HEIC wraps HEVC, which is patent-encumbered — which is exactly why browsers won't decode it on their own. A browser-based HEIC converter has to bundle its own decoder, and that's a licensing problem and a patent problem at the same time.

WebP and AVIF are royalty-free and the browser decodes them natively, so those two tools bundle no decoder at all. HEIC belongs in a Windows application that can hand the job to the codec Microsoft already licensed, and that's where it's going.

The photo app that finds the picture

Search thirty thousand photos by what is actually in them rather than by filename, and open the formats a browser cannot — HEIC from a phone among them. Same rules as everything here: it runs on your own machine and you buy it once.
