The same colour, written three ways

HEX is what you find in a stylesheet. RGB is what image editors and canvas APIs want. HSL is the one worth knowing, because its three numbers mean something a human can reason about: hue, saturation, lightness.

That last point is practical. Building a palette in HEX is guesswork. In HSL you hold the hue, drop the lightness, and you have a darker version of the same colour rather than a slightly different colour that happens to be darker. Type into any of the three boxes and the others follow.

Picking a colour off the screen

The eyedropper captures the exact colour of any pixel on your display — a logo in a PDF, a screenshot, a competitor's site, a photograph.

It uses the browser's native EyeDropper API, which means Chrome and Edge have it and some other browsers do not. Where it is unavailable the rest of the tool works normally.

The contrast checker is the part that matters

Light grey text on a white background looks refined on a designer's calibrated monitor and is illegible on a laptop in daylight. Contrast is the accessibility failure that ships most often, because it is invisible to the person who chose it.

Enter a text colour and a background and you get a plain verdict — easy to read, hard to read — with the formal ratings underneath. AA is the level most guidelines and procurement requirements ask for; AAA is stricter. If you only want one answer, the words at the top are the answer.

Questions

Common questions

What does this tool do?

It lets you pick a color and see it written every common way (HEX, RGB, HSL), grab a color from anywhere on your screen, and check whether two colors are readable together.

How do I convert a color between formats?

Type a color into any of the HEX, RGB, or HSL boxes and the others update to match. So you can paste a HEX code and instantly read its RGB and HSL values.

How do I grab a color off my screen?

Use the eyedropper button, then click anywhere on screen to capture that exact color. (The eyedropper works in Chrome and Edge; some browsers don't offer it.)

What's the contrast checker for?

It tells you whether text in one color is readable on a background of another — in plain language ('Easy to read', 'Hard to read'), with the formal accessibility ratings underneath for anyone who needs them.

What do AA and AAA mean?

They're accessibility standards for how much contrast text needs to be readable. AA is the common requirement; AAA is stricter. The plain-language verdict on top already sums it up if you don't need the technical detail.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The tool runs entirely on your own computer in the browser — nothing leaves your machine.
